Teaching Practice
‘You can teach a person all you know, but only experience will convince him that what you say is true.’ –Richelle E. Goodrich

Philosopghy of Teaching Statement
In the words of Goodrich, ‘You can teach a person all you know, but only experience will convince him that what you say is true.’ I believe that showing and doing is a key method when teaching in the classroom. Demonstrating allows the students to develop their understanding of the learning content being taught. This is backed up by the social learning theory, proposed by Albert Bandura, which posits that people learn through observing, imitating, and modelling others’ behaviour. I aim to bring demonstrations throughout all of my units and lessons, especially the Visual Studies unit. I incorporate hands-on activities where students explore techniques and art elements within the movements taught, which in turn allow the students to be engaged within the lesson and allow them to process the information through experiential learning. This method of teaching also informs me on assessment methods and strategies used. Implementing peer assessment strategies, specifically for group projects 'enhances the quality of peer review by reducing student “free riding” and promotes positive interdependence' (Kao, 2013).

These strategies proved to improve student independence of learning throughout my lessons which is something that want to continuously develop throughout my practice. ‘A good teacher is one who makes himself progressively unnecessary.’ –Thomas Carruthers.
