In a community where the Eastern European population is rising and also in tribute to the Ukrainian war I wanted to create a piece of art referencing the textile designs that are prevalent in eastern Europe. Using 3D glasses one design stands out from the other showing that even if we are different we are still one.
The Knitted Now
Research
Keywords as interconnected and social fabric knit us together into one society. These words got me to think about how the world is becoming so globalized and cultures are interlinking everywhere. Fabric, embroidery, textiles are such a big and important part of Eastern European/Slavic cultures. I researched the different designs and motifs that were common in Romania, Ukraine, Albania, Bulgaria and many more. Although you can tell the differences in each country's patterns there still seem to be some similarities. The Knitted Now for me was about how we are so different yet so similar. Romania shares many motifs with Ukraine, such as the tree of life, horns, and rhombus which are integrated within the textile designs. I started by sketching out these motifs and annotating their meaning of them. I worked larger with ink re-creating a Romanian design on some blue paper. This sparked an interest in working largely on this project. I researched designs between Romania and Ukraine and created on Photopea two unified pieces that I would then later put on the 2 x 1.83 m canvas.
